The Gospel according to Luke is the third of the four Gospels found in the New Testament. This Gospel is the longest, and was originally joined to the Acts, making a two volume book. Irenaeus, Tertullian and Jerome, are examples of individual witnesses who named the author of the third Gospel, St. Luke; a physician from Antioch, and fellow companion of St. Paul. It is also evident in the preface, when Luke uses the first pronoun saying, â€Å"I too decided to write an orderly account† (1:1-4). Most scholars, such as those who wrote the Navarre Bible and â€Å"Inside the Bible,† believe the Gospel was written in the early 60s A.D. For example, Luke presents Christ’s life on earth as a journey towards Jerusalem; so on the day of Jesus’ ascension, the earthly symbol becomes the Holy City. The structure of the Gospel of Luke begins with the prologue, depicting the purpose of the intended account. It follows with the infancy narratives; the Saviour’s birth and youth; His baptism and temptation; His message and mission; the journey to Jerusalem; and His death and resurrection. This Gospel places great emphasis on Jesus of Nazareth as the Messiah promised to the Jews in the Old Testament. It also addresses the theme of universal salvation. Christ’s redemption is intended for everyone, and He has come to gather all people to himself. The trinity is evident from the beginning, with God and the Holy Spirit enveloping them self in Mary; while the journey of the Son of God, is the basis of the Gospel. Mary, the mother of Jesus, has a significant role in this Gospel, through accepting God’s call to conceive Jesus through the Holy Spirit. Without this approval, the events in the New Testament would not exist. This Gospel uses a variety of literary devices consisting of: narratives, foreshadowing, parables, themes and miracle stories.
